Captain Cod Nottingham Reviews

I had moved out of the area for year and a half and only recently moved back into the area. I must say I have recently visited captain cod and the service was very pleasant and friendly. The food was lovely. I was serviced with a smile and there was no delay with my order. I do not have take away very often but I think captain cod will now become my secret guilty pleasure. Thank you for the service captain cod.

I saw several negative reviews which annoyed me so much they persuaded me to register here, as I've been using Captain Cod for 22 years and it has consistently the best fish and chips in the area. Used the new Cod and Scallops a little recently but CC is much better value, with faster service, bigger portions and beautifully cooked fish. Friendly, efficient service too. And easy parking.

I completely agree with anything positive said. I have been going every week for almost 10 years (believe it or not) and the service has been, on the whole, excellent. I don't know if everyone else here happened to go on a a day when it was worse that usual but I've always found it prompt and friendly. The staff are always kind and chatty and up for a laugh but still work at the same time and I've never seen anyone have too queue for more than about 12 minutes, usually people are in and out. The food is just great, proper chips that are always soft and fresh and the fish is crispy and flaky. and, despite what I've read on this page, the portions are VERY reasonable and just right. Regular chips provides way more than enough for one and I certainly wouldn't expect, nor require a large chips at £2.10 to stretch to more that two people, and it does. Please don't shut this place off for anything else on here, I have been regular for so long and I can't think of anywhere else you should go over captain cod.

Horrified to read the comments below, couldn't disagree more, I've been going regularly for about three years and they simply have the best fish in the area by a long way and the chips are all fresh (not frozen and recooked like most chippies around here) and are fried in really great tasting batter - they have cuttings from competitions and newspaper articles on the wall showing the high quality of their food.

I like the fact that the staff are down to earth and you can have a giggle with them when they go in or a proper conversation - also I don't know what kind of fool thinks its a good thing to turn up to an empty chip shop and be served fish straight away, that means they've left your fish to overcook and go manky, wouldn't you rather it was cooked fresh for you?? Conversely if you turn up and wait for 5-10 mins because they are so busy with punters that love the fish and you have to wait for them to freshly fry you a piece of fish I'd also take that as a very healthy sign - and that's what they do here!

it sounds like people who want a slick 'organisation' with pressed uniforms and fancy signs to serve them fish on perry road in don't have much common sense and don't have much business in a local chippy !! What do you want most from a fish shop may I ask? Good corporate values and and a be-suited executive to say 'Have a lovely day sir/madam' or really great fish and chips?

By the way, Friday night is awesome with home made chicken tikka which is fantastic.

The only competition in this part of town is the Mapperley Frier on Mapperley top, they are good, they are more corporate (uniforms/staff/signs) but they do charge for it and the fish is also much smaller in my experience. They don't have parking (like Captain Cod do) and in the early evening, the idea of queueing to get into Mapperley with all the traffic really puts me off.

portion size very disappointing you would think that a large chips would be more than a 'tray' full and enough to feed at least 4. I got charged 2.10 for a tray of chips and was told it was a large. small chips are a pound and a measured in a cone. Rip off go elsewhere

Avoid going here.. Worst food ever! Was told the chicken meat was not spicy as I ordered "plain" chicken meat for it to be so spicy that my tongue was on fire! I do not like spicy food and cost over £6 for my meal for me to just eat my chips! Awful and a waste of money. Rude and ignorant staff

I've been going captain cod for nearly ten years and also are very good friends with the owner, the poor lady has difficulties standing due to her bad neck and back problem so therefore finds it harder to keep her staff in order and to be honest I don't like getting served by her staff but the only thing stoping me from doing that is the food.

SERVICE - 6/10 sometimes 10/10

FOOD QUALITY - 10/10

Very disappointed. Have used several times over the years, ordered some fish over the phone to be collected, upon arrival was made to wait another 15 mins while others were served. Being the point of calling an order though so I do not have to wait for 30 mins. Staff very rude, when asked if I wanted any fish cooking I stated that I phoned an order through and was still made to wait while the ignorant young man watched the chips cook. Couldn't believe that one! Staff seemed lazy,no intention of serving until a queue of 8 was formed. Only the owner was serving with 3 lazy guys in the background. The fish used to be delicious as I request lightly battered, unfortunately this was not the case. I left fuming and will never ever return to this once great chip shop.
Never turn up on a Friday evening, this is not fast food at its best but like waiting in an airport departure lounge.
Overall, staff have some serious attitude problems which I hope the owner will correct, but quality of food has deteriorated. How can you ask customers," is anyone waiting for chips " in a chip shop ? Terrible organisation.
