I just moved house and wanted to hire a car for the period where my family was visiting for Christmas to collect them from the airport and take them to places but the man at Avis refused me the rental car as I couldn't prove where I lived. I had a utility bill and a letter from my solicitor who I bought the house through and also said he could phone my estate agent who would confirm that I bought the house but because I didn't pass some online address check they use he wouldn't give me the car. He said the estate agent 'could be my friends pretending to be the estate agent' which was the stupidest excuse I had ever heard and I pointed out that he could just look up the number and ring them himself to which he couldn't think of any reply than 'computer says no'. I could have lied and given him proof of my old address which would have passed the check so they would basically rent out to an incorrect address as long as it passes their check. Truly horrific customer service and when I emailed Avis about this I didn't even get a response. Don't go there!!!
